surgery for benign disease
Sometimes surgery is required for benign
breast conditions.
This would be considered if the condition was causing you a lot of problems and is not improving by non-surgical means. An example could be a benign lump which is increasing in size.
Before surgery is planned, you will need to have a full assessment made of your condition, if this has not previously been done. This will usually be done by a breast physician who will take a history from you, examine you and perform an ultrasound examination. She may also recommend that you have a mammogram. A biopsy is usually taken to confirm the benign diagnosis, although this can occasionally be omitted.
For most benign conditions, surgery is not required and will only be considered if you want the lesion removed. If this is the case, an appointment will be made for you to discuss this further with one of our surgeons. They will be able to talk to you about likely scarring and any other details you need. In most cases, the scar will be placed either around your nipple, or in a skin crease under or to the side of your breast.
In most cases, surgery can be done as a day case procedure. You will normally need one to two days off work. You may need to wear a surgical or sports bra for a few days for comfort.
