the breast physician
Breast Physicians are female doctors who have been specifically trained in breast medicine.
This includes: clinical breast examination, interpretation of mammograms, the performance and interpretation of breast ultrasound, and the performance and interpretation of fine needle and core biopsies of the breast. Most importantly, a breast physician is able to put all these test results together and can explain the outcome to the patient and to her referring practitioner.
Breast physicians see women with a variety of breast concerns: lumps, hormonal changes, breast pain, skin changes, lactation problems, family history of breast cancer, other risk factors for breast cancer, anxiety due to a friend having breast cancer or as part of their general health check.
Most women who see a breast physician will have a non cancer diagnosis at the end of their assessment. Symptoms are usually due to benign breast disease, hormonal changes, musculoskeletal effects, or a combination of these.
Breast physicians can provide information to the patient concerning their investigations and provide a plan of management for their breast problem. They can organise appropriate referral to other members of our multidisciplinary team and are skilled in counselling.
After breast surgery, breast physicians will follow up and review patients on a regular basis.
Some women will have had tests performed elsewhere. They may require a second opinion on these results, or simply an explanation of their breast problem. Breast physicians are happy to review and discuss any breast problem, however minor you may think your concern is.
