Consultation Process

Once you have decided you are a candidate for breast augmentation (enlargement) or reduction surgery, you will need to consult with a breast surgeon or doctor to discuss the process. During this time you should come to an understanding concerning what your goals are in breast augmentation. The complete process from the breast augmentation surgery through to recovery will be discussed.

The size and type (silicone or saline) of breast implants will also be discussed with your breast specialist. Most breast specialists or surgeons will expect you to try on breast implant sizers for you to get an idea of the breast implant size you would like to choose.

Your breast augmentation doctor will also help you to decide on the type of breast implant to be used. There are currently two primary types of breast implants available, which are saline and silicone breast implants. Some breast surgeons feel that silicone implants have a more natural look and feel than saline implants. This is due to the fact that silicone gel has a texture that is similar to breast tissue.

Saline implants have some advantages over silicone implants. Silicone implant ruptures are more difficult to detect compared to saline implants.

During the consultation process for breast reduction surgery the breast surgeon must understand your needs and establish your goals, and review your lifestyle, medical conditions and medical history. Your breast specialist will enquire about your breast size and any related issues concerning the appearance of your breasts you feel is important. You will be examined for your breast surgeon to get an idea of the size and shape of your breasts, quality of your breast skin, and the location of your nipples and areolas.

On the day of your surgery you should wear loose-fitting clothing that can be taken off and put back on easily, and ensure you have someone to drive you home after surgery. Breast enlargement surgery usually takes between one and two hours, although the amount of time needed will depend on how and where the implant is placed.
