Breast health is important for all women. Our breasts consist of specialised glandular tissue which is under the control of many hormones. Breasts undergo cyclical changes throughout our lives. The most obvious of these are the monthly changes associated with the menstrual cycle. There is also a cycle of development, growth and involution over our lifetime. Finally, breasts will undergo major changes each time we become pregnant or breast feed.

Our unique genetic makeup may change the way our breasts respond to our hormones and some changes may be due to outside factors. Some of these factors are beyond our control, but there are a number of things that we can do to improve our breast health. These include ensuring that we have regular breast checks. We can monitor our breasts ourselves at home by performing regular breast self examination. We can also get our breasts checked by regular mammograms or ultrasound examinations There may also be some lifestyle changes which improve our breast health.

Lumpiness is a common finding, especially when you examine your breasts for the first time. Much of this lumpiness is normal, but if a lump persists, feels different or worries you it any way it should be checked out. This can be done easily by making an appointment with a breast physician. A breast physician can also help you with any other breast symptoms or concerns you may have.
