What is a Mammogram?

Mammography is a particular type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to screen breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer in women.

A mammogram x-ray is a non-invasive test where the breast is exposed to a small dose of ionizing radiation, producing a picture of the inside of the breast.

Who is a Mammogram suitable for?

Mammograms are used as a breast imaging tool to discover early breast cancer in women experiencing no breast cancer symptoms, and to detect and diagnose breast cancer in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.

Mammogram screening is recommended every year for women, beginning at age 40. Research indicates that annual mammograms lead to early detection of breast cancers, when they are easier to cure. Women who are at increased risk of breast cancer, due to a genetic history, or those who have had breast cancer previously, should discuss their breast screening programme with their breast screening clinic.

3D Mammography

What is 3D Mammography?

Also called breast tomosynthesis mammogram or simply “Tomo” is an advanced form of mammography which involves taking images of the breast in slices. This allows separation of overlapping structures and therefore reduces the ability of breast cancer to “hide” behind other pieces of normal tissue.

What is the benefit?

3D Mammography has been shown in multiple trials to:

Detects more invasive breast cancers across all breast densities
Reduces the likelihood that you will be recalled for additional workup after your mammogram

We suggest that if your tissue is particularly dense, then 3D-mammography combined with an ultrasound scan is recommended.

What will I experience?

The experience is very similar to having your normal mammogram. The level of compression is the same and the length of time for the mammogram is approximately the same.

What is the cost?

If you are Southern Cross insured your 3D Mammography will be covered. If not covered by your Health Insurer, there is an additional charge for 3D Mammography above and beyond the cost of your routine mammogram. Our booking staff can discuss this with you.
