Spider Veins Sclerotherapy
Spider veins are commonly found on the legs and face, and can cover a small or large skin surface area.
About Spider Veins
Spider veins are commonly found on the legs and face, and can cover a small or large skin surface area. Spider veins appear closer to the skin than varicose veins, and their short, jagged lines make spider veins appear similar to spider webs or tree branches. Spider veins are often blue or red in colour
Spider veins are caused by the back-up of blood resulting from weak valves in the veins. These weak valves, which usually prevent blood from flowing backwards as it moves towards your heart, cause the blood to leak back into the veins and accumulate there.
Spider veins can also be caused by physical injuries, sun exposure, and hormone changes.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a spider vein treatment procedure where a solution is injected into the spider veins to make them shrink and disappear.
Who is Sclerotherapy suitable for?
Sclerotherapy is suitable for people who are bothered by the sight of spider veins on their body, and who wish to undergo spider vein treatment.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
Normally, two or more sessions of sclerotherapy for spider vein treatment is necessary to achieve the desired results. Each sclerotherapy session can take 15 to 30 minutes. The skin of the affected area is held taut while a chemical solution is injected into the spider veins using a very fine needle. The solution then aggravates the lining of the vein, causing it to harden and seal off, stopping blood from entering that portion of the vein.
Each sclerotherapy session may require a large number of injections, although the needle is so fine that pain is not normally a problem. As the sclerotherapy solution moves through the smaller veins you may feel some stinging, and the spider veins may become red and itchy for a few hours.
It will take a few weeks or months for the spider vein removal treatment to take effect.
Before and after Sclerotherapy treatment
It is important to discuss with your doctor which medications you are using before your sclerotherapy treatment, including aspirin and ibuprofen. Following the spider vein removal treatment cotton wool pads are applied to the injection site, and you may be required to wear support stockings for a few days following sclerotherapy.
You should be able to return to normal activities straight after sclerotherapy, although vigorous physical activities including weight lifting should be avoided during the recovery period. You will be encouraged to walk for at least thirty minutes a day after spider vein treatment.
The common side effects of sclerotherapy include bruising around the injection site, brown lines or spots appearing at the spider vein site, and the appearance of new, small blood vessels at the site of the sclerotherapy treatment.
